Wicker furniture is furniture that has been woven using a hard material. Originally wicker furniture would have been made from natural materials such as cane and rattan that grows wild in tropical climates.

All weather, wicker garden furniture now tends to be made from a synthetic material. Man-made fibres have many advantages over natural materials when used outdoors; Synthetic garden furniture is colourfast, maintenance free and will not become brittle with age unlike rattan garden furniture.

Natural rattan and cane disadvantages when used in the outdoors:

Rattan garden furniture is great if kept dry but if rattan is left outdoors permanently overtime the rattan will dry out and become brittle.
Rattan when left outdoors (whether in its natural form or coloured) will fade with colour.

Natural Wicker Furniture

Cane is too thick to weave but the core from the cane can be extruded creating a perfect material to make wicker baskets or wicker furniture; this material is called ‘core rattan’. One piece of 20mm cane would be enough to extrude 7 pieces of core rattan and can be done using basic machinery.

Rattans are long, thin and tend to be of different shapes and sizes making it difficult to sort into correctly sized pieces of furniture. Wicker garden furniture made from synthetics obviously do not have this difficulty, and furthermore are available in any thickness requested.

Synthetic and resin wicker garden furniture

Outdoor rattan or wicker garden furniture made from synthetic materials are available in either round core or flat weave. The thickness of the material can be anything from 2.5mm to 10mm depending on the customers’ choice. Synthetic wicker furniture also offers the customer choice with colour. Black, mocha and natural are by far the best selling colours.
